Writing a New Way

A few months ago Sherry and Donna on Irresistible Ideas for Play Based Learning talked about making bamboo pens for their kids to use.

I don't have any bamboo to cut, but I did find some bamboo pens a few years back. We use these at various times to practice writing in a different way. We use black paint and the pens to dip and write and dip and write.

We talk about ways that people wrote in Bible times (on scrolls with pens made from reeds) and pretend to write like them.

The kids enjoy this experience. We often talk about writing with these pens and how it is different from writing with pens and pencils. I think they did a pretty good job.

  1. That's a terrific idea! I wonder if we could use this with feathers too and do some feather pen writing:)

  2. You know Scott in all the years I've been using our bamboo pens I have never thought to use black paint. ... Black water, black ink but never black paint! Thanks for the wake up call. We WILL certainly try black paint now, it looks terrific!
