Painting Together

This week we did one of my favorite activities--we made a community/group painting. I'm always fascinated by the process that happens during this activity. This time I was able to document the development of our art masterpiece more fully.

BEFORE - the stage is set

Painting individual pictures and designs

Pictures begin to merge together

Painting over previous paintings

Filling every white space

Adding, retouching, finding all the little white spaces

Each one wants to add his own touch

The finished product

The best part: While I love the final product, the process and the discussion are the best part of the activity. I heard about volcanos and deep holes. I heard about plans to cover every square inch of the paper. I heard kids making plans and carrying them out. I watched as dots appeared and disappeared under layers of color.

Our very wet painting is now drying. Next week we'll display the masterpiece for everyone to enjoy. In a few weeks, we'll recycle it by cutting it up and using it as part of a collage.
