My Favorite Words
Yesterday I was reunited with my class. We haven't seen each other in a couple of weeks due to the holidays. We had a great time. In fact, I overheard quite a few gems—
A boy was stamping and drawing with a pencil. His paper got a small hole in it. His comment: "This is definitely not a masterpiece."
A boy asked: "Can we make something from this (drawing) paper?" I told him that he could. He folded and drew. "I made 'E' a paper DS," he said. (It looked just like a Nintendo DS game system.)
A group of kids were working in the dramatic play center. Then I heard: "Yay! The girls are now in charge!"
I listened to one girl indignantly explain how her mother had taken things from the girl's Christmas stocking because her mother "wanted more stuff than she got in her own stocking."
"Are you married with her?" one boy asked me and pointed to Mrs. Cindy. When I said I was, he smiled shyly and whispered, "I did NOT know that."
I love hearing kids talk and watching them work. But yesterday I heard my very favorite words...words I hear just about every week. "Mr. Scott, look!"
And every time I look, I see something wonderful. Carefully printed words. An intriguing construction. A drawing or painting. An exploration of a new idea. An interesting action or movement. A collection of unusual items.
Yes, those are my favorite words. "Mr. Scott, look." Achievement, exploration, connection, relationship--all summed up in three words.
I am a lucky man.
